KI-Media2 KI Media Cambodia’s trade with UK up 48 pct in 1st quarter

20 May, 2012

PHNOM PENH, May 20 (Xinhua) — The volume of bilateral trade between Cambodia and the United Kingdom for the first three months of 2012 is 178 million U.S. dollars, up 48 percent compared to the same period last year, according to a trade report provided by the British embassy here on Sunday.

It said the main Cambodia’s products exported to the UK are garment products, footwear, sugar and honey, rice and bicycles. In return, the country imported industrial machinery, automobiles, medical and pharmaceutical products and malt from the UK.

Pan Sorasak, secretary of state at Cambodia’s Ministry of Commerce, attributed the growth in the bilateral trade volume to Cambodia’s political stability, good security, and favorable business environment for businesspeople.

More importantly, the two countries have had a good and long- lasting diplomatic relation since 1953, he said.

According to the report, currently, more than 15 UK companies have set up offices in Cambodia in different sectors including the garment and footwear industry, banking and finance, engineering and architecture, education, hospitality and property services.

The UK is the fourth largest investor in Cambodia. According to the report of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, since 1994 to 2011, Cambodia had received the promised investment of 2.4 billion U.S. dollars from the UK.

20 May, 2012

Pattaya Mail

BANGKOK, 18 May 2012 – Supreme Commander General Tanasak Patimapragorn said that Thailand and Cambodia have been discussing the border issue, adding that both nations are on good terms.

General Tanasak stated since both nations are having good relations, a joint military drill for disaster mitigation will be conducted once again, after being halted for a while.

He added that members of a joint working committee on the Preah Vihear Temple issue are cooperating well. He said discussions are constructive, with members agreeing to make the current disputed zone bomb free.

The Supreme Commander said the next meeting’s discussion will be on the process to abide by the International Court of Justice’s decision ordering both sides to withdraw their troops. He explained that the meeting will find ways that will be fair for both sides, and that if the talks go smoothly, there would be no need for a third nation to mediate between the two sides.

German production house Film Base Berlin is developing a Cambodia-themed drama Game Park, to be directed by French-Cambodian filmmaker Vanessa Ly.

Film Base’s Mathias Schwerbrock is aiming to set the film up as a co-production with France. It will be mostly filmed in France, with a few days of location shooting in Asia.

Scripted by Ly and Beirut-based French writer Charlotte Gachon, it revolves around three generations of a French-Cambodian family living in Grenoble, which is haunted by the genocide which took place in Cambodia during the Pol Pot regime in the 1970s.

“It’s a drama with thriller elements,” said Schwerbrock. “The 17-year-old son spends all his time in front of a video game, but then he starts to ask questions when he sees parallels between the game and his family’s past.”

Ly, who has been based in New York since 1997, has has previously directed a couple of well-received shorts – Mekong Interior, which won best short at the 2004 Bangkok film festival, and High Winds, which screened at Edinburgh and Slamdance.

Film Base, which is focused on international co-productions, co-produced Don 2 with India’s Excel Entertainment and recently provided production services for Korean director Ryoo Seung-wan’s In Berlin when it filmed in the German capital.

The busy company’s co-productions also include The Two Women, an adaptation of Ivan Turgenev’s play starring Ralph Fiennes, with Russia’s Horosho Production; Paul Black’s The Same Eyes with Patrick Cassavetti, and Aleksei Uchitel’s The Stockholm Syndrome with Uchitel’s Rock Films.
